🛡 Nel 1917 Ignazio Benelli acquistò una tenuta agricola con un castello che portava i segni di epoche diverse: dalle fondamenta di un’antica villa romana, a un primo impianto medievale, poi trasformato in casino di caccia dei Malatesta e, infine, a un assetto ottocentesco.

Per generazioni la residenza restò una proprietà privata. Poi, insieme alla sua famiglia, Paola Pizzighini Benelli, alla guida della Fondazione Palazzo Boncompagni e di Castello Benelli, decise che questo patrimonio non poteva restare segreto.

Dopo più di dieci anni di lavoro, oggi Castello Benelli fa parte dei circuiti Grandi Giardini Italiani e Dimore Storiche Italiane.

🛡 In 1917, Ignazio Benelli purchased a residence that bore the hallmarks of different eras: medieval foundations, a 19th-century structure commissioned by Count Spina and even further back, a former Malatesta hunting lodge.

For generations, the residence remained privately owned. Then Paola Pizzighini Benelli, head of the Palazzo Boncompagni Foundation and Castello Benelli, along with her family, decided that this heritage could not remain secret.

After more than ten years of work, Castello Benelli is now part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani and Dimore Storiche Italiane networks.

Dietro il restauro che ha riportato Castello Benelli agli antichi splendori c’è il lavoro di Paola Pizzighini Benelli, presidente della Fondazione Palazzo Boncompagni e di Castello Benelli, che con la famiglia lo ha seguito sala per sala, dal Salone di ingresso allo Studio delle Aquile.

Da allora la dimora è diventata un polo culturale, con concerti, visite guidate e appuntamenti dedicati all’arte.
Ogni venerdì di questa estate la visita attraversa le sale del castello e prosegue nel parco, dove un aperitivo accompagna il momento più suggestivo della giornata.

Behind the restoration that has brought Castello Benelli back to its former splendor is the work of Paola Pizzighini Benelli, president of the Palazzo Boncompagni Foundation and Castello Benelli, who, with her family, oversaw it room by room, from the Entrance Hall to the Eagles’ Study.

Since then, the residence has become a cultural hub, with concerts, guided tours and art events.

🏰 Cosa spinge una famiglia a investire dieci anni di lavoro nel restauro di un castello che nessuno vedeva da quasi un secolo?

Quando nel 1917 Ignazio Benelli acquistò questa dimora ottocentesca nella campagna di Bordonchio, il castello era già una stratificazione di secoli: costruito dal conte Pietro Spina sulle fondamenta di una fortezza medievale dell’XI secolo, con sale affrescate, scuderie, un giardino cinto dai pini marittimi. Per quasi cent’anni è rimasto chiuso, custodito dalla stessa famiglia.

Poi Paola Pizzighini Benelli ha avviato un restauro conservativo che ha restituito ogni sala al suo stato originale con l’obiettivo dichiarato di aprire al pubblico un patrimonio che appartiene al territorio quanto alla famiglia. Nel 2023 le porte si sono aperte.

When Ignazio Benelli purchased this 19th-century residence in the Bordonchio countryside in 1917, the castle was already an amalgamation of centuries: built by Count Pietro Spina on the foundations of an 11th-century medieval fortress, it featured frescoed rooms, stables and a garden surrounded by maritime pines. For nearly a hundred years, it remained closed, guarded by the same family.

Then Paola Pizzighini Benelli began a conservative restoration that returned each room to its original state, with the stated goal of opening to the public a heritage that belongs to the area as much as it does to the family. The doors opened in 2023.
