CASTELLO BENELLI
The castle, located in the Bordonchio countryside, was erected at the behest of Count Pietro Spina in the 19th century, tracing the foundations of an ancient medieval castle dating back to the 11th century.
Castello Benelli opened its doors a few years ago after a careful restoration that saw it return to its former glory: an enchantment that opens just a few steps from the sea among the richly frescoed halls of the recovered interiors and the greenery of the ancient maritime pines and surrounding gardens. Located in Igea Marina, Castello Benelli takes its name from Ignazio Benelli, who became its owner in 1917 and is still owned by the Benelli family, which has overseen its restoration and enhancement.
Guided tours
This summer, Castello Benelli offers a rich program of guided tours: not only classic guided tours “Discovering Castello Benelli,” but also candlelight evening tours and tours accompanied by the soundtrack of Isabella Bui’s violin.
Castello has joined the Great Italian Gardens and Period Residences, and these tours will give visitors a chance to admire the extraordinary setting of the building and all the surrounding countryside.
Castello Benelli awaits you with two appointments:
Castello Benelli in music by candlelight – In the sunset hours with Isabella Bui and her magical violin. Listening to music and its origin, you will discover new corners and stories of the Castle. A sensory tour by candlelight to discover the Castle in a new light.
Discovering Castello Benelli – We are waiting for you to discover the secrets of Castello Benelli and give you a journey back in time, immersed in a historical and natural setting of rare beauty.

Nestled in the quiet of the Romagna countryside, the Castle offers elegant and versatile settings, ideal for private receptions, corporate meetings, exhibitions, shootings and film productions. Each space is designed to accommodate every kind of occasion with refinement and care, transforming it into a memorable experience.
The exterior is perfect for open-air events and is of great scenic impact in a historic-artistic setting in harmony with the natural surroundings. Helping to fascinate visitors are the imposing stables that take us back to ancient times and stately life.
Part of the event can also be staged inside. The rooms have all been frescoed differently and recently restored in both ceilings and walls.

History
Located in Bordonchio, a strategically important area since Roman times, Castello Benelli stands near the ancient church of San Martino. Mentioned in the Bavarian Codex and various documents dating back to the 10th century, the castle is considered one of the oldest “castra,” according to historian Luigi Tonini.
Originally built as a hunting lodge and later used by the Malatesta family, the castle underwent several renovations, culminating in a full 19th-century reconstruction by the noble Spina family. Purchased in 1917 by Cav. Ignazio Benelli, it now showcases preserved period furnishings and interiors. Each room reflects a refined iconographic vision, blending natural motifs with medieval references.
Outside, the estate retains its original garden-park layout, featuring ancient maritime pines, plane trees, elms, cypress trees, and a vast array of roses. It’s a place where architecture and landscape merge in perfect harmony.

🍇 Castello Benelli è anche il fulcro di un’azienda agricola, storicamente dedicata alla coltivazione della vite e alla produzione di vino rosso, ancora attiva che vanta numerosi premi.
🌾 Attualmente produciamo fagiolini, grano, girasole, mais, succo di mela ed eccellenze locali su una superficie che in origine copriva un’estensione di mille ettari, significativamente ridotta durante la guerra.
“La presenza della tenuta contribuisce anche a definire l’identità del castello come centro di eccellenza e innovazione agricola.
La stretta connessione tra i due crea un ambiente unico che valorizza la storia, la cultura e il territorio”, spiega Paola Pizzighini Benelli.

🌾 We currently produce green beans, wheat, sunflowers, corn, apple juice and local specialties on an area that originally covered 1,000 hectares of land, significantly reduced during the war.
“The presence of the estate also helps define the castle’s identity as a center of agricultural excellence and innovation.
The close connection between the two creates a unique environment that enhances history, culture and the territory,” explains Paola Pizzighini Benelli.

💥 Boom di presenze a Castello Benelli quest’estate!
🕯️ “Abbiamo più che raddoppiato le presenze rispetto all’anno scorso: ogni giovedì sera tra le cento e le duecento persone per le visite guidate, altrettante per i concerti a lume di candela o le serate di cinema d’autore”, racconta la presidente Paola Pizzighini Benelli.
Non solo italiani, ma anche tanti stranieri: austriaci, francesi, tedeschi, polacchi.
💒 Castello Benelli è Casa comunale dal 2023 e quest’anno abbiamo celebrato qui le prime nozze: le ex scuderie sono lo spazio ideale per cene e ricevimenti.
💫 E non è finita!
📆 Il 4 ottobre ospiteremo il raduno di auto d’epoca e il il 9 novembre celebriamo la Giornata dell’Agricoltura.
🙏 Vogliamo ringraziare ognuno dí voi per la presenza e l’entusiasmo che ci dimostrate in ogni nostra iniziativa.

💥 Attendance boom at Castello Benelli this summer!
🕯️ “We’ve more than doubled our attendance compared to last year: every Thursday evening, between one hundred and two hundred people attend the guided tours and the same number attend the candlelit concerts or arthouse cinema evenings,” says President Paola Pizzighini Benelli.
Not only Italians, but also many foreigners: Austrians, French, Germans and Poles.
💒 Castello Benelli has been serving the community since 2023 and this year we celebrated our first wedding here: the former stables are the ideal space for dinners and receptions.
💫 And that’s not all!
📆 On October 4th we’ll host a vintage car rally and on November 9th we’ll celebrate Agriculture Day.

🌳 All’esterno mantiene l’impianto originale di giardino-campagna, con pini marittimi secolari, platani, olmi, cipressi e una ricca collezione di rose.
🎋 Pur avendo mantenuto le caratteristiche tradizionali del luogo, il giardino è stato integrato con nuove piante.
🌹 È stato realizzato anche un roseto con diverse classi e varietà di rose.

⛪️ Situato a Bordonchio, in una zona strategica fin dall’epoca romana, Castello Benelli si trova vicino all’antica chiesa di San Martino.
🏰 Già citato nel Codice Bavaro e in documenti a partire dal X secolo, il castello è tra i “castra” più antichi secondo lo storico Luigi Tonini.
🦊 Nato come dimora di caccia e utilizzato anche dai Malatesta, l’edificio fu ristrutturato più volte fino alla ricostruzione ottocentesca voluta dalla famiglia Spina.
⚔️ Oggi è stato riportato all’antico splendore da un intenso lavoro di restauro durato dieci anni da parte della famiglia Benelli che lo possiede dal 1917!
