CASTELLO BENELLI
The Castle is set in the countryside of Bordonchio, in the province of Rimini. It was built at the behest of Count Pietro Spina in the 19th century, following the foundations of an ancient medieval castle dating back approximately to the 11th century.
Castello Benelli recently opened to the public following a careful restoration that has returned it to its former glory: an enchanting residence just steps from the sea, with richly frescoed interiors and the lush greenery of ancient maritime pines and surrounding gardens. Located in Igea Marina, Castello Benelli takes its name from Ignazio Benelli, who became its owner in 1917. The castle remains in the Benelli family, who have overseen its restoration and cultural development.

The 2026 guided tour season at Castello Benelli continues. An afternoon in the historic grounds of Castello Benelli, among maritime pines and gardens – for families, children, and anyone who wants to discover one of the most beautiful historic residences on the Romagna Riviera.

From July, on Friday evenings, Castello Benelli introduces a new format for the summer season: the guided tour of the historic rooms ends in the garden with an aperitif during the golden hour, among the maritime pines and the rose garden.

Castello Benelli opens its doors to private events in a setting of great charm and historic significance. Nestled in the tranquillity of the Romagna countryside, the Castle can host private parties, corporate events, weddings (Castello Benelli is also a registered civil ceremony venue), photo shoots, film productions and team building experiences. Every space is designed to welcome each occasion with care and refinement, turning it into a memorable experience.

The exterior is ideal for open-air events and provides a striking scenic backdrop within a historic and artistic setting, complemented by the impressive stables that evoke an earlier era of noble life. Part of the event can also be held indoors, in rooms that have each been frescoed in a different style and recently restored, both ceilings and walls.

History
Located in Bordonchio, a strategically important area since Roman times, Castello Benelli stands near the ancient church of San Martino. Already mentioned in the Codex Bavarus and in documents dating from the 10th century, the castle is among the oldest “castra” according to historian Luigi Tonini.
Originally a hunting lodge, also used by the Malatesta family, the building was renovated several times before the 19th-century reconstruction commissioned by the Spina family. Acquired in 1917 by Cavaliere Ignazio Benelli, it still preserves the furnishings and decorations of that era. Every interior space reflects a refined iconographic vision drawing on both nature and the Middle Ages.
Outside, the Castle retains its original garden-countryside layout, with century-old maritime pines, plane trees, elms, cypresses and a rich collection of roses — an oasis of beauty where architecture and landscape merge harmoniously.

The castle is suitable for all kinds of celebrations.
You can also get married here with a civil ceremony; it’s a town hall. The reception continues immediately afterwards, in the same location; no one moves.

🏰 Cosa spinge una famiglia a investire dieci anni di lavoro nel restauro di un castello che nessuno vedeva da quasi un secolo?
Quando nel 1917 Ignazio Benelli acquistò questa dimora ottocentesca nella campagna di Bordonchio, il castello era già una stratificazione di secoli: costruito dal conte Pietro Spina sulle fondamenta di una fortezza medievale dell’XI secolo, con sale affrescate, scuderie, un giardino cinto dai pini marittimi. Per quasi cent’anni è rimasto chiuso, custodito dalla stessa famiglia.
Poi Paola Pizzighini Benelli ha avviato un restauro conservativo che ha restituito ogni sala al suo stato originale con l’obiettivo dichiarato di aprire al pubblico un patrimonio che appartiene al territorio quanto alla famiglia. Nel 2023 le porte si sono aperte.

🏰 What drove a family to invest ten years of work restoring a castle unseen for nearly a century?
When Ignazio Benelli purchased this 19th-century residence in the Bordonchio countryside in 1917, the castle was already an amalgamation of centuries: built by Count Pietro Spina on the foundations of an 11th-century medieval fortress, it featured frescoed rooms, stables and a garden surrounded by maritime pines. For nearly a hundred years, it remained closed, guarded by the same family.
Then Paola Pizzighini Benelli began a conservative restoration that returned each room to its original state, with the stated goal of opening to the public a heritage that belongs to the area as much as it does to the family. The doors opened in 2023.
